Uummannaq has not just one but more than 10 glaciers in Uummannaq area! Including one of the worlds fastest moving glacier known as Store Glacier or Great Qarajaq, it moves 5,7 km just for a year.

Here you can witness now at days hunting and fishing community everyday life. It hasn’t change very much from early days hunting and fishing culture. Saattut situated approx. 23 km east of Uummannaq with 229 inhabetants. It got it’s own school, shop, church, small fishing fabric, kindergarten.

We will visit the museum and the granite church, walk around Uummannaq’s hilly streets and paths between the colourful houses. We will walking by preserved earthen huts and old houses where you will learn about how Inuit lived at that time. Uummannaq 360º

Here you have a opportunity to sail around the famous Uummannaq mountain. Uummannaq means “heart – like” with 1175 meters heart shaped mountain that lies just behind the town. The story says when you have visit Uummannaq a piece of your heart remains on the island, calling you back for the rest of your days. You can take a photo by boat of the heard shaped mountain and if we are lucky we can see some whales or other sea mammals like seals.

Visiting Qilakitsoq

The place we have to visit is an old Inuit settlement across the fjord on the Nuussuaq peninsula. In 1972 there have been found will preserved mummies, which is dated to 500 years. The famous 8 mummies has provided a great deal of information on how the Inuit lived and what their clothing looked like. It is still possible to see some of the old graves, but please remember that you are visiting an old graveyard and that is strictly prohibited to remove any relict from the area. The original mummies can be seen in the National Museum of Greenland in Nuuk and Uummannaq museum has a very good exhibition of the mummies, including copies of their clothing.

We will start sailing from Uummannaq to Itilliarsuup Kangerlua. And on the way we will go on land at Saattut, where we ask one of the local fisherman how the weather and conditions was for 10 years ago. After half an hour in Saattut we will sail to our final destination. Here you can see where the glacier was for couple of years ago, so there will be a time to see how much ice it has melted.

In 1860’s came a man to Qarajaq from the nearest settlement and he came for Qarajaq to stay. He became a solid nucleus in the population where they stayed more than hundred years. The man was a great hunter named Tivagdlarge(Tivallaqqi) christen name Bernhard Andreassen. After couple hour is Qarassap Imaa we will sail to a settlement Ikerasak. Here you will see fishermen and hunters everyday life, but also how the locals spent the summer. When we sailing home there will be a good chance to see some whales.

Sailing to the Black Angel Mine

Would you like to experience unforgettable sailing to the old mine called Maarmorilik, also known as The Black Angel mine. In 1933 it began mining marble and it lasted all the way to 1973. After a geological survey in the area, it appears there are zinc, iron, lead and silver on the other side of the fjord. Then they made a cable car leading to the mine “Black Angel” up in the mountain 750 meters high. On the way to the Maarmorilik we will stop at a place where there has been marble mining even before they moved to Maarmorilik.
